Roger Martin has provided these notes and photos on fitting a high torque (geared) starter motor, which has the advantage of reduced battery load and better starting, particularly in cold conditions or with high-compression engines. Murray Cowley has also contributed advice, on an mgexp.com forum thread
The Auto Electric Supplies website showed a WOSP Performance starter model LMS994 as being suitable for a Magnette so I ordered one. There was no way it was going to fit though, so maybe it was configured for a Mark III or IV Magnette. However, AES came up trumps and supplied me with an adaptor plate that enabled me to rotate it approximately 90 degrees and squeeze it in between the steering column and the distributor.
It then took two goes with AES supplied spacers to get the ring-gear alignment correct but I am hopeful it will now do the job, see photos
