Posting this on behalf of Terry Owen from the Isle of Man. He is helping to sell a Magnette belonging to his friend who recently passed away. The car has been in a shed for many years, during which time mechanical parts were taken out and limited repairs were done.
Following is Terry's very honest assessment of condition, and bearing in mind that the car needs to be removed by end of November, and the buyer will need to arrange transport from the Isle of Man, the asking price is £2000. If brought to the UK mainland it will need to be re-registered as both the original UK plate and the last Manx number were surrendered. If interested please contact me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and I'll put you in touch with Terry.
Body
Cills are corroded and need cutting out and replacing, more attention needed to driver side cill. The remainder of the car underbody appears solid to ‘hammer tap’ although there is surface rust, the whole of the underbody appears to have been cleaned and painted at some point but this is now peeling off. There has been a hole in the boot floor and spare wheel well that has been repaired but needs dressing and finishing. The car would benefit from a re-spray, although could be touched up, panel by panel, to remove rust spots.
Engine
The engine is out on the bench and is a BMC Gold Seal, mileage and condition unknown although it is complete with twin SUs, distributor, starter, exhaust and inlet manifolds and generator. Unable to locate the clutch pressure plate at present.
Gearbox
The gearbox is loose on the floor with propshaft and seems in good order, gear lever moves through gears OK.
Exhaust
Front half is missing, rear section on floor but US, i.e. rusted and holed.
Boot
In the boot the fuel pump is missing but inside of boot renovated and in solid condition with aforementioned repair.
Wings
Rear wings and wheel arches - corrosion around the bottom edges but are repairable with appropriate repair panels
Front wings - front o/side around rear of headlight needs attention and lower section of wheel arch.
Nearside front wing needs attention to lower wheel arch.
Both wings seem otherwise solid and repairable with the appropriate repair panels.
Doors
All doors seem basically solid with each having slight corrosion along bottoms as would be expected; all doors open and close well but window winder mechanisms will need freeing up.
Glass
Glass all round in good condition with no breaks.
Chrome work
Everything present and not bad for age of car, not in perfect condition but good enough for a start and possibly re-chrome some bits later.
Under bonnet
Under bonnet all disconnected cables and tubes etc have I.D. labels attached to facilitate re-assembly, master brake/clutch cylinder is still in place, clutch activating cylinder is tied up (suspended), wiper motor in place, voltage regulator, relays, etc in place.
The front inner wings are solid and the exposed chassis sections solid to hammer tap test. It looks as if the engine may have been removed for access to work on cleaning and painting engine compartment area, but this may have been as long as ten years ago and the paint is now peeling, but is re-paintable.
Wheels
The Wheels spin freely and are fitted with as new cross plys, hand brake works on rears but no effect from foot brake on front or back, although all lines and master cylinder connected and oil in master cylinder. Hub caps on all wheels.
Inside
Inside car is remarkably good considering how long it has been locked away, as you will see in the photos, all the wooden dash is in good undamaged order, all the other wooden trim is present and in good order. Radio is missing.
Seats
All the seats are good with no tears or rips, although one front has a stitching joint in need of repair. All seats are leather and would obviously, given the cars age, benefit from some leather treatment and polish.
Door panels
Door panels are all good and would benefit from some TLC and one or two would benefit from some new fixing clips. As stated previously the window winders would need freeing up as all are a bit stiff to operate, but it is do-able. Parcel shelf OK just needs TLC, cleaning, etc. Head lining OK could be cleaned or replaced as preferred.
Carpets
Carpets could be renovated but would be better replaced. Note there is a roll of new green carpet in the back of the car, obviously bought in ready for replacement still in the manufacturers wrapping. Also with this carpet is a roll of new green door seal trim, again obviously bought in ready for replacement work but like the carpet never got around to being done.
