Fuel Pump Fault Finding

With the ignition on, the pump is not ticking Disconnect the power lead from the terminal on the pump lid and check if it sparks against the body of the pump. If there is no spark, the problem is electrical. Check for a break in the supply.
If there is a spark, clean the pump points and check again for normal function.
If the pump fails to operate after cleaning the points, disconnect the fuel pipe from the carburettors. Switch on again. If fuel flows from the pipe and the pump works normally, there is a blockage in the carburettor, so fuel cannot flow from the pump. Clear the blockage.
If no fuel flows at the carburettor end, reconnect the fuel pipe and disconnect the suction pipe from the tank to the pump. Switch on. If the pump ticks rapidly, the problem is a blockage on the supply side. Try blowing through towards the tank to clear the pipe.
If, with the suction pipe disconnected, the pump fails to tick, the problem lies with the pump mechanism. The points may be clean but may not be making proper contact. The diaphragm mechanism may be jammed or the throw-over mechanism may not be working properly. Remove the pump from the car and check its function thoroughly.
The pump ticks rapidly but delivers no fuel, or too little fuel Check that there is fuel in the tank.
If there is plenty of fuel, there is probably an air leak on the suction (tank) side of the pump. Check that all connections are tight and that the pipe is undamaged.
The pump ticks normally but delivers little or no fuel This suggests a blockage either in the pump or in the supply pipe between pump and carburettors. Check the filter, which can be removed with the pump in situ. If the filter is clean, then remove the carburettor supply pipe and blow it through.
If the problem persists, the suction pipe from the tank may be partially obstructed. Blow it through towards the tank.
If the problem persists, there is probably a blockage in the pump. Dismantle it and check for an obstruction in or around the valves that is preventing the "non-return" from working.
