In all cases use the flywheel fitted as standard to the replacement engine. Most 3 bearing flywheels are basically similar but the 5 bearing engines use a different type secured by six set-screws and two dowels instead of the eight bolts on earlier units.

If a later MGB engine (18GD and beyond) is fitted using an 18GB backplate, then it is the backplate that governs choice of flywheel and starter motor.
